Mother Tongue Other Tongue 2016
Mother Tongue Other Tongue is a poetry competition for young language learners across the Yorkshire and Humber region. There are two categories: one for mother tongue speakers and one for foreign language learners. Both are divided into age categories.
· Mother Tongue – you are invited to write a ‘remembered’ or ‘original’ poem or song in your home language (this can be any language except English, or in a mix of languages). You need to write, in English, a short account of the inspiration for your poem. This category is judged on the English commentary.
· Other Tongue – you are invited to write your own original poem in a language you are learning. Entries must be from non-native speakers of any of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Urdu
This year MTOT is also running a postcard competition for children and young people who speak a language other than English. Young people are invited to create a postcard on the theme of My Language, My World. It should be up to A5 size and needs to have some written language included.
All languages are included (except English) in the postcard competition.
It's recommended that your postcard should show what it is like to be bilingual today.
